Famous for its horse-drawn carriages and with a rooster as its provincial emblem. Lampang boasts a long history of human settlements on the Wang River basin, some of which dating back to more than 1000 years. It is rich in archaeological evidence reflecting ancient civilisations of Hariphunchai, Lanna and Burma. Lampang is the only province in Thailand still retaining horse-drawn carriages as a means of transport with in city limit. Visitors can hire such vehicles to tour places such as markets, traditional houses along the river bank and the numerous temples in town.
The Thai Elephants Conservation Centre is located in the Thung Kwian forest park in Hang Chat district about 32 kilometres from town on the route to Chiang Mai. It is the only facility in the world devoted to the training of elephants for timber work using these pachyderms as labor. There are performances and training demonstrations. The art of making wooden elephants is also demonstrated. There are 2-3 shows daily. Visitors can enjoy feeding these intelligent giants or to ride them to see natural surroundings. The centre provides health care for the elephants.
Lampang today boasts the largest collection of Burmese temples in Thailand. Take Wat Si Chum on Tipwan Road for example. It is the biggest of the 31 Burmese temples in Thailand. It was built by Kyuang Daga U Yo, a Burmese tycoon, during the reign of King Rama V. The temple is constructed in layered Burmese style with tin roofs gabled by intricate woodcarvings. The temple also has a Buddhist relic from Burma.

Tourist Attractions Lampang

Wat Phrathat Lampang Lunag

Lies some 20 kilometers south of Lampang and is one of the North's finest temples. The chedi towers above surrounding trees. To the left of the chedi is a viharn with a carved wood facade and double - level roofs. Harmonious proportions and exquisite interior decoration make Wat Phrathat Lampang Luang one of the best examples of Northern - style religious architecture.

Wat Phtathat Chom Ping

Wat Phrathat Chom Ping is situated at Mu 5, Ban Chom Ping, Tambon Na Kaeo, Amphoe Ko Kha about 26 kms. south - west of Lampang provincial city. The unnatural happening of this temple is the shade of the pagoda reflexes on the floor of the convocation hall through the hole of its window, this similar event also happened at Wat Akkho Cahi Khiri, Amphoe Chae Hom in Lampang.

Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao

On the right bank of Mae Nam Wang is an old building which consists of an impressive chedi on a rectangular base with a round spire topped with gilded bronze plaques. A Burmese-style chapel topped by tiered roofs stands against it. The chapel contains a Burmese style Buddha image with particularly interesting decorations. The chapel probably dates from the late 18th century. Beautiful colours and elaborate harmony make Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao one of Thailand's best examples of Burmese-style temples.

Wat Chedi Sao

(Temple of Twenty Chedis) is also on the right of the bank of Mae Nam Wang, north of town. The temple is attractively set in an open ricefield. The complex is impressive with its Burmese - style bell - like spires.

Wat Sichum

This monastery is situated on Lampang - Ngao Highway just passing the main entrance of Lampang Teacher's Training College and branching off at Km. 601 on the left of this monastery. Its architecture is of Burmese arts having very sophisticated and beautiful wood carvings on the structure of the Vihara while gold gilded works are found on the walls, ceiling and big pillars in the Vihara, regarded as another exquisite graceful beauty of Burmese arts. It is regrettable that the vihara's upper part which was made of wood was mostly damaged by fire. Only the carved-wood arch at the entrance has been left.

Lampang also has a couple of hot springs. The more well-known one, and more professionally managed, is in Jae Son National Park in Muang Pan district. It has some 40 private spa rooms as well as indoor and open-air hot spring pools. The other hot spring is in Ko Kha district. Run by the district administration, it has 10 private bathrooms, each with a tub.
Jae Son National Park is about 68 kilometres from Muang district of Lampang. Take route No. 1035 past Jae Hom and move on to route No.1252 and drive for another 11 kilometres. The park headquarters is on the left.

Shopping Lampang

Cottage Industries: Woven Fabrics - The woven fabrics in Thung Kwao, with their distinctive patterns and brocades, are made on traditional looms using locally grown cotton and natural dye. In Ban Luang, the woven fabrics are known for their unique border designs.

Celadon - Celadon is a popular gift item Because Lampang has the finest kaolin deposit in Thailand, the celadon industry flourishes there. Celadon factories line the road leading into town, and products are sold in downtown shops.

Sa Paper - This paper is made from mulberry, and is a versatile material that can be made into umbrellas, lamps, artificial flowers. The local sa paper industry is located at Ban Nam Thong.

  • Khong Kin Ban Hao on Jamthawee Road (tel: 054-226-514) serves northern style dishes.
